The Coif:
A headcovering that fit the head snuggly and could be worn beneath other head coverings like the veil in the portrait above. Coifs were more often adorned with embroidery, rather than pearls or gemstones, if at all.

The Caul:
Also called a "muffincap" is a round piece of material gathered onto a band and fitted to the back of the head to cover the hair. It was often adorned with pearls and other gemstones.
The French Hood
Believed to have originated in France, the French hood was thought to be introduced to English nobility by Anne Boleyn. It was one of the longest-lasting headwear fashions, worn from roughly 1530 until 1580, although styles and shapes changed. French hoods were often adorned with pearls and other gemstones, and it is believed they were worn over a coif and/or caul.
